Oscar-Nominee Benedict Cumberbatch delivers in The Power of the Dog and will be starring in Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness later in March 2022.
There are certain actors that you feel you kind of get sick of seeing everywhere (ahem, Ryan Reynolds). While Cumberbatch may fit that description, what sets him apart is that many of the characters are so wildly different. He was in four major movies last year and only one of them was a Marvel movie (Spider-Man: No Way Home).
The Power of the Dog has Cumberbatch playing a rancher in Montana, which has him nominated for Best Actor. While actor Sam Elliott has his qualms with it for its “allusions of homosexuality” and the fact that this Western movie is filmed in New Zealand, Cumberbatch firmly stands by his portrayal and movie. The movie recently won Best Picture at the EE British Academy Film Awards, commonly known as BAFTA’s. Director Jane Campion also won Best Director, the third woman director to win in the award’s history.
Recently, Cumberbatch just received his Hollywood Walk of Fame star and is kind of pushed to the forefront of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as both Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans have both left the comic book movie scene.
Marvel mastermind Kevin Feige was there to offer a few words of praise. “Benedict has turned this character into an icon, appearing in a historic three of the top six films of all time. It’s been quite a journey,” Feige said.
With Avengers: Endgame leaving the MCU in this kind of state where it can go in any direction, Cumberbatch has a lot of scenery to chew if he is as important as we all think he will be in the coming movies.
Multiverse of Madness, which is directed by Spider-Man director Sam Raimi, will follow Cumberbatch as Dr. Strange as he deals with alternate realities in the aftermath of Spider-Man: No Way Home. The movie will also feature MCU heavyweights like Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Karl Mordo, and Benedict Wong as Wong.
It just seems like it is a lot of work for one person to accomplish. Cumberbatch does not seem to mind as he has already agreed to four new movies and is already filming one at this moment.
