Alexander Wang, the fashion designer, took a break after sexual assault allegations. His return to the runway was met with great acclaim during the highly anticipated Los Angeles show.
Many shouted “This was amazing!” and “I LOVE IT!” while others cheered Wang’s 50-look runway collection for “Fortune City”, which celebrated Asian-American culture in the historic Chinatown neighborhood Tuesday night.
Wang hosted his first show in 2019, shortly before he was accused of sexually assaulting and drugging transgender and male models.
Wang initially denied the allegations, which were first made in late 2020. He called them “baseless” and said that he did not agree with some details. Last year, Wang stated in a statement that the accuser had misled him and promised to “set a better example” for public figures. Later, a lawyer representing the victims claimed that Wang had spoken with the accusers and said, “We recognize Mr. Wang’s apology and are moving forward.”
Although the accusations did damage Wang’s brand, they didn’t completely cripple it, especially in China. While he was still dressing up celebrities like Rihanna or Julia Fox, he released a campaign with Lucy Liu. His brand is still being sold in major retailers.
800 people were invited to Tuesday’s event. They lined up to get into Wang’s show. The event was very public with Kimora Lee Simmons, Lisa Rinna, and Harry Hamlin as actors. Others, such as Gunna and Coi Leray, rappers, and K-pop singer CL, watched the 15-minute show.
Wang used models from different ethnic backgrounds and sizes, including Adriana Lima, a pregnant model who was praised for her graceful moves down the runway while carrying her baby bump. There were many pieces available, including denim and leather coats in various shades, denim and black coats, denim and green coats, red velvet sweatsuits, heavy wools that had been cut into shorts for bikes, crop tops, and large wool coats.
Wang ran onto the stage after the show was over. He smiled big and waved at the attendees, who were mostly in black, before making his way backstage. The show ended with heavy red-colored confetti sprinkling over everyone. This created a party atmosphere, especially for those who attended the Asian Night Party that featured a local food market.
Wang was constantly accompanied by cameras in the market. Many people greeted Wang with handshakes and hugs and praised his efforts.
